First 2021 Happy News

LERN Member Gets Stamp
For the second time, a LERN member program has gotten its own U.S. postal stamp. The Chicago Botanic Gardens has its own stamp, part of the “American Gardens” series of stamps.
Congratulations to Beth Pinargote and Christina Swets of the Chicago Botanic Gardens. The first LERN member to get its own U.S. stamp was the Chautauqua Institution, in 1976.
Captain America salutes boy hero
Captain America star Chris Evans saluted another hero when he reached out to 6-year-old Bridger Walker of Cheyenne, Wyoming, with a personalized message.
The boy saved his little sister’s life by standing between her and a charging dog. After getting bit several times on the face and head, he grabbed his sister’s hand and ran with her to keep her safe. He later said, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”
Electric Cars Get Cheaper
As electric cars become more mainstream, the automobile industry is rapidly approaching the tipping point when, even without subsidies, it will be as cheap, and maybe cheaper, to own a plug-in vehicle than one that burns fossil fuels, reports The New York Times.
A few years ago, industry experts predicted 2025 would be the turning point. But the technology is advancing faster, and experts now see 2024 as the turning point year, some even think 2023.
Dancing May Help Prevent Falls
Here’s another reason to promote your dancing classes to older adults. Dancing may help prevent falls in the elderly, a review of studies suggests. The more that older people danced, the better, reports The New York Times.
Investors Shun Fossil Fuel
As concerns over climate change grow, investors are beginning to shun fossil-fuel businesses. For example, British Petroleum (BP) has announced that over the next decade it will shrink its oil and gas production by 40 percent and increase investments of renewables tenfold, to $5 billion a year, reports The New York Times.
