Check-ins, immediate feedback, and allowing people to structure 80% of their day. These are a few of the new management strategies being developed by LERN members as part of a new management style for the 21st century.
Invented by Gen Z (born 1998-2015) managers, it has been named by LERN “The Nurturing Management Style.”
Two Big Implications
Two big implications for your program and others:
1.To retain your best people, you will need to adopt this new management style.
2.Your classes. This is a big opportunity. Every organization in your community will also need to learn about the new management style to remain successful.
Members Involved
LERN members on the cutting edge of implementing the new management style include Austin Howe, Cary, NC; Angela Frietag, Concord, CA; and Krista Billingsley, Columbia, MD. They introduced the first strategies this year, along with the LERN staff.
No One is Normal
One of the central concepts of the Nurturing Management Style is Gen Z’s understanding that no one is normal today. In this economy, we need people with different strengths and skill sets, not all the same skill sets. That also means that people have different weaknesses and needs.
In the last century, we treated people Equally by treating them the Same. Gen Z managers treat people Equally by treating them Differently.
Moving Forward
In the coming year LERN will be working with members to discover more successful nurturing strategies. LERN will also explore offering online classes on the new Nurturing Management Style in partnership with member organizations.
